2020/2021 Online Teen Art Classes
September 2020
Intro to Community Art

Mondays and Wednesdays in September
Class Session: Mondays, 530-630pm EST
Studio Session: Wednesdays, 530-630pm EST

Community Art is defined by many things. Sometimes referred to as “community practice art,” or “community engaged art,” this is an art practice involving the community around the artist. Community art is a practice where the artist(s) involve people and the world around them as much as possible. It is embracing the idea that art can be a tool for social change and connection.

In our class session, I will act as facilitator and guide, supporting and helping the students in the class to find and create projects that speak to what they care about. The students in this class will create small individual works together and also larger works as a class.
October 2020
Art Journaling: Discovering Your Style

Mondays and Wednesdays in October
Class Session: Mondays, 530-630pm EST
Studio Session: Wednesdays, 530-630pm EST

In this class, we experiment with many different styles and genres. Play. Doodle. Paint. The mission is to develop or continue an ongoing studio art practice. What do you need to cultivate a space of creativity? How can you connect with your art practice? We will have daily prompts presented in Google Classroom. These prompts are intended to spur small, bold creative moves - ones that might be repeated, developed, or discarded.
The goal is not necessarily to create elaborate, refined projects, but to allow yourself to trial approaches you might not normally consider - and to learn from failures, as well as successes. Weekly presentations will introduce a number of tactics used by artists and designers to find the generative potential in restriction or uncertainty, and to work through creative block, find and honor your personal art style, and develop a habit of regular making.

November 2020
Intro to DSLR Photography

Mondays and Wednesdays in November
Class Session: Mondays, 530-630pm EST
Studio Session: Wednesdays, 530-630pm EST

Learn how to use a DSLR camera for photography! Teens practice the many features of a camera and understand shutter, aperture, ISO, depth of field, composition, perspective, and many other elements of photography. More than anything, kids will develop their own style with open-ended prompts/assignments to encourage them to practice taking pictures. We will have prompts, and encourage kids to send in their work.

Each week we will look at the work of famous photographers, ask critical questions and relative questions about what they see. Asking questions about the principles of art and design, but also if they like it? Asking why? We will follow the same critical process when they share their photos. Teens will finish the class understanding their cameras, their style, and have a start to a portfolio of new work that they are proud of.
December 2020
Intro to Interdisciplinary Art

Mondays and Wednesdays in December
Class Session: Mondays, 530-630pm EST
Studio Session: Wednesdays, 530-630pm EST

Interdisciplinary Art is composed of many genres and mediums of art. Rather than one medium, like painting or photography, an artist may engage in making their own paper and printing their photography on it. It may include performance art, sculpture, new media, or even manipulating and playing with light and space.

Teens are invited to practice and engage with many forms of interdisciplinary art as we study artists and art making, hone their interests and styles, and design a single work or project that embodies their interests.
In our class session, I will act as facilitator and guide, supporting and helping the students in the class to find and create projects that speak to the many mediums that students are drawn to. What do they like as individuals, and how can we merge them? We will study many forms of interdisciplinary work, often referencing work that has been at ArtPrize. We will get to know the artists, their mode of work, their influences, and use these as inspiration to create their own work. Teens will finish the class with connections, collaborations, and a completed interdisciplinary piece.
